Shine Rugs FAQ: Everything You Need to Know About Patchwork Cowhide Rugs

Understanding Patchwork Cowhide Rugs

A patchwork cowhide rug is made from individual pieces of genuine hair-on-hide leather, precisely cut and hand-stitched together to create geometric patterns like chevrons, stripes, squares, or houndstooth. Unlike traditional single-hide rugs that show the natural shape of one cowhide, patchwork rugs are carefully constructed to create structured, modern designs that work beautifully in contemporary interiors.
Each piece of hide is selected for consistent quality and color, then stitched together using high-resistance nylon/polyester thread designed specifically for leather working. The result is a rug that combines the natural beauty and durability of cowhide with the clean, architectural look of modern design.

Yes. Patchwork cowhide rugs are widely used in modern interiors because they combine natural texture with structured design. They’ve evolved beyond the rustic, western look you might associate with traditional cowhide into something that works beautifully in Scandinavian, minimalist, contemporary, and even urban spaces.
The geometric patterns give them a refined, intentional look that feels current rather than trendy. Because they’re made from a natural material with timeless appeal, they don’t go out of style the way synthetic rugs with dated patterns might. A well-made patchwork cowhide rug looks just as good in year ten as it did on day one.

If you’re looking for a rug that combines durability, low maintenance, and long-term design value, yes. Here’s the honest breakdown:
A quality patchwork cowhide rug will last 10+ years with normal use and actually look better over time as the leather develops character. Compare that to synthetic rugs that show wear within a few years and often need replacing. When you calculate the cost per year of use, a $3,000 rug that lasts 15 years costs you $200 per year. Three $1,000 synthetic rugs over the same period cost you $3,000, and you still don’t have the quality or aesthetic appeal.
Cowhide is naturally stain-resistant, hypoallergenic, and doesn’t trap dust and allergens like pile rugs. It’s also incredibly durable for high-traffic areas and pet-friendly homes. You’re not just buying a rug, you’re investing in a piece that will anchor your space for years.
That said, if you’re renting short-term or decorating a space you’ll completely redo in a year, maybe a budget option makes more sense. But if you’re creating a home you want to live in and love for the long haul, the investment pays off.

Patchwork rugs are actually more durable and versatile than single-hide rugs. Here’s why:
Construction:
Single-hide rugs are exactly that, one piece of cowhide in its natural shape, which is somewhat irregular and organic. Patchwork rugs are constructed from multiple pieces stitched together, which means they can be made in any size, shape, or pattern you want.
Durability:
The patchwork construction with reinforced stitching actually makes these rugs stronger and more resistant to wear than single hides. The multiple pieces distribute stress differently than one continuous hide.

Design flexibility:
Patchwork rugs let you choose specific patterns and color combinations, while single-hide rugs are limited to the natural coloring of that particular hide.
Size options:
Single-hide rugs are limited to the size of the animal (typically around 7-8feet). Patchwork rugs can be any size you need—we’ve made everything from 5×7 accent rugs to 12×16 statement pieces.
Both are beautiful, but patchwork gives you more control over the final look while maintaining all the benefits of genuine cowhide.

Durability & Real-Life Use

Extremely. Cowhide is one of the most durable natural materials you can use for flooring. The hide itself is naturally strong and resistant to wear, think about what cowhide has to withstand on the actual animal. That natural toughness doesn’t go away when it becomes a rug.
Our patchwork construction adds another layer of durability because the reinforced stitching with leather-working grade thread creates a rug that can handle serious use. We’ve had rugs in high-traffic commercial spaces, homes with multiple large dogs, and families with young kids, and they hold up beautifully.
The key is that cowhide doesn’t show wear the way synthetic fibers do. There’s no pile to crush, no fibers to fray. Minor scratches or scuffs often blend into the natural texture of the hide, making the rug look lived-in rather than worn out.

With proper care, 10+ years easily. We have customers who’ve had their rugs for 15-20 years and they still look incredible.
The durability comes from both the material (genuine cowhide is built to last) and the construction quality. Our rugs are made with high-resistance thread specifically designed for leather working, and each hide is hand-selected for quality before it ever gets stitched.
Unlike synthetic rugs that degrade over time, fibers break down, colors fade, backing deteriorates, cowhide is a natural material that develops character as it ages. A five-year-old cowhide rug doesn’t look old; it looks broken in and beautiful.
That said, lifespan depends on how you care for it. Follow the basic care guidelines (don’t soak it, clean spills promptly, vacuum gently) and you’re looking at a piece that will outlast most furniture.

Absolutely, and this is one of our favorite things about these rugs. Pets actually love cowhide because it’s a natural material. Dogs especially tend to find a favorite spot on a cowhide rug and claim it as their territory.
Here’s why they work so well with pets:
Durability:
Dog claws, cat paws, and even the occasional zoomies session won’t damage the rug the way they would a delicate wool or synthetic rug.
Easy cleanup:
Pet accidents happen. With cowhide, you blot up the liquid immediately with a dry cloth, then clean the area with a damp cloth and mild soap solution. The natural oils in the hide resist stains, so if you act quickly, there’s usually no lasting evidence.
No trapped odors:
Unlike pile rugs that trap pet hair, dander, and odors deep in the fibers, cowhide has a smooth surface that doesn’t hold onto smells.
Hypoallergenic:
If you or your family members have allergies, cowhide doesn’t trap allergens the way synthetic rugs do.

The only caveat: discourage chewing and aggressive scratching. A determined puppy or a cat using the rug as a scratching post can damage it. But normal pet activity? Totally fine.

Yes, for all the same reasons they work with pets, durability, stain resistance, and easy cleanup.
Kids spill things. It’s basically their job. The beauty of cowhide is that most spills wipe right off if you catch them quickly. Juice boxes, milk, ketchup, even the dreaded slime experiments, we’ve heard it all, and with prompt cleanup, the rug survives.
Cowhide is also naturally hypoallergenic, which matters if your kids have allergies or asthma. It doesn’t trap dust, dirt, and allergens the way high-pile synthetic rugs do.
The texture is soft and comfortable underfoot, so kids actually enjoy sitting and playing on these rugs. And because the surface is smooth rather than plush, it’s easy to wipe down and keep clean.
One thing to keep in mind: cowhide rugs are an investment, so if your kids are at an age where they’re actively destructive (we’re talking permanent markers, scissors, aggressive jumping), you might want to wait a year or two. But for normal childhood chaos? These rugs can absolutely handle it.

Some light shedding when the rug is brand new is completely normal. You’ll notice loose hairs in the first few weeks—this is leftover from the factory cutting process, and it’s not a defect. It’s just the hide settling in.
After that initial period, shedding should be minimal to non-existent with proper care.
The key to preventing long-term shedding is keeping the rug dry. Water changes the pH of the hide, which can cause the hair to loosen and shed. So never soak your rug, don’t machine wash it, and if it gets wet, let it air dry naturally. Follow those rules and shedding won’t be an issue.
If you notice excessive shedding after the first few weeks, it usually means the rug has gotten too wet at some point. Let it dry completely, and the shedding should stop.

No. All our rugs come with a built-in anti-slip backing made from wool material with anti-slip dots. This keeps the rug firmly in place on hardwood, tile, or any smooth flooring without needing a separate rug pad.
The backing also provides a slight cushioning effect (and we offer an optional EVA cushioning layer for even more comfort at no extra cost), so the rug stays put while still feeling comfortable underfoot.

No. We don’t recommend using a separate rug pad because our rugs already have premium anti-slip backing built in. Adding another layer underneath can actually interfere with how the rug lies flat and may cause bunching or wrinkles.
The anti-slip backing we use (wool material with anti-slip dots) provides both grip and floor protection, so you don’t need anything additional. Just place the rug directly on your floor and it’ll stay in place.

Cleaning & Maintenance

For routine maintenance, it’s surprisingly simple:

Weekly/as needed:
Vacuum gently using only suction, no rotating bristle brush. The brush can damage the hair. If your vacuum doesn’t let you turn off the brush, use a handheld vacuum or the hose attachment instead.
For surface dirt:
Wipe with a dry cloth or take the rug outside once or twice a year for a gentle shake.
For spills:
Blot immediately with a dry cloth or paper towel to absorb the liquid. Then wipe the area with a damp (not wet) cloth and a small amount of mild soap. Never soak the rug—just damp is enough. Let it air dry naturally.
The golden rule: keep it damp, never wet. Water changes the pH of the hide and can cause problems like shedding or bald patches if the rug gets too saturated.

Yes, but with one critical rule: turn off the rotating bristle brush.
Use standard suction only. The rotating brush that works great on other types of carpets will damage the natural hair on cowhide. Most modern vacuums have a setting for hard floors or delicate surfaces that disables the brush, use that.
If your vacuum doesn’t have this option, use a handheld vacuum or the hose attachment instead. You’re just removing surface dust and dirt, which doesn’t require aggressive brushing.
Vacuum in the direction of the hair for best results, and you can do this weekly or whenever you notice the rug needs it.

Absolutely not. Never machine wash, dry clean, or fully submerge a cowhide rug.
Here’s why: excessive water exposure changes the natural pH of the leather, which compromises the structural integrity of the hide. This leads to shedding, bald patches,
stiffness, and potentially permanent damage to the rug.
Cowhide rugs don’t need deep cleaning the way synthetic rugs do. The natural oils in the hide resist stains, and the smooth surface doesn’t trap dirt. Spot cleaning with a damp cloth handles 99% of what you’ll encounter.
If you absolutely must have the rug professionally cleaned, find a specialist who works specifically with leather and hide. A regular carpet cleaner or dry cleaner will ruin it.

Light moisture is fine, if you spill something and wipe it up with a damp cloth, that’s not a problem. The issue is when the rug gets soaking wet or stays wet for an extended period.
If your rug gets wet from a larger spill, pet accident, or cleaning mishap:
1.
Blot up as much moisture as possible with dry towels
2.
Let the rug air dry naturally in a well-ventilated area
3.
Don’t use heat (no hair dryers, no radiators, no direct sunlight for extended periods)
4.
Once it’s completely dry, the rug should be fine
What you want to avoid is leaving the rug wet for hours or days, which can change the pH of the hide and cause the hair to loosen and shed. But a quick damp cleaning that air dries within an hour or two? Totally fine.

No. This falls under the same category as machine washing, too much water will damage the hide.
We know it’s tempting to think you can just hose it off outside when it gets dirty, but cowhide doesn’t work that way. The natural leather needs to stay relatively dry to maintain its integrity.

Stick to spot cleaning with a damp cloth for normal maintenance. Your rug will last far longer that way.

The key is acting quickly. Here’s the exact process:
Step 1:
Blot up as much liquid as possible with a dry cloth or paper towels. Don’t scrub or rub, just press down and absorb.
Step 2:
Dampen a clean cloth with water and add just a drop of mild soap (dish soap works fine).
Step 3:
Gently wipe the affected area. You’re not trying to soak the rug, just clean the surface.
Step 4:
Go over the area once more with a clean, damp cloth (no soap) to remove any soap residue.
Step 5:
Let it air dry naturally.
This works for red wine, coffee, juice, pet urine, and most food spills. The natural oils in cowhide are incredibly stain-resistant, so if you act within a few minutes, there’s usually no lasting evidence.
For tougher stains (grease, ink, permanent marker), you may need more work, but the same gentle approach applies. And honestly, if you’ve got a really stubborn stain, reach out to us, we can walk you through it.

When brand new, yes, your rug will have a natural, pleasant leather smell. This comes from the tanning and finishing process, and it’s a normal characteristic of authentic leather.
Some people love this smell (it reminds them of a new leather jacket or car interior). Others find it noticeable at first. Either way, it fades naturally over a few weeks as the rug acclimates to your space and proper ventilation helps it dissipate.
If you want to speed up the process, just make sure the room is well-ventilated. Open windows, run fans, and the scent will fade faster.
After the initial period, cowhide rugs don’t hold onto odors the way synthetic or wool rugs do. The smooth surface and natural properties of the hide actually resist trapping smells, which is one reason they work so well in pet-friendly homes.

No. Properly treated cowhide does not attract insects.
Our hides go through a professional tanning and finishing process that makes them unsuitable for bugs. You won’t have issues with moths, carpet beetles, or other pests that are attracted to wool or natural fiber rugs.
That said, like any rug, you still want to keep it clean and vacuum regularly. But you’re not going to wake up to bug damage the way you might with a wool rug that wasn’t properly treated.

Sizing & Placement

The general rule is that your rug should extend 18-24 inches beyond the sides of your coffee table and reach at least the front legs of your furniture.
Here are typical recommendations based on seating arrangements:

For a standard L-shaped sectional (approximately 91″ x 91″):
An 8x10ft or 9x12ft rug works well.
For larger U-shaped sectionals (120″ x 120″):
Go with a 10x14ft or 12x16ft rug.
For a sofa + two chairs arrangement:
An 8x10ft typically works, but measure your specific layout.
The key principle:
All the main furniture pieces should either sit entirely on the rug or have their front legs on it. This creates visual cohesion and makes the seating area feel intentional and pulled together. A rug that’s too small, where all the furniture sits completely off it, looks like an afterthought.
If you’re unsure, measure your space and reach out to us. We can help you determine the right size, and because we do custom sizing, we can make a rug that fits your exact layout perfectly.

First, know that creases are completely normal. Because we ship worldwide, rugs are folded for transit protection. What you’re seeing is temporary and will naturally relax within a few days of laying the rug flat.
To speed up the process:
Option 1:
Lay the rug flat in your space and let time do its work. Most creases disappear within 3-5 days.
Option 2:
Place heavy items (books, furniture) on the creased areas overnight. The weight helps the rug settle faster.
Option 3:
If a specific edge is curling due to dry air, lightly mist just that area with water (don’t soak it), place a protective towel over it, and weigh it down overnight.
Don’t try to force the rug flat immediately or use heat (like irons or steamers). Just give it time, and it’ll settle naturally.

Yes, completely normal and expected. Shipping rugs flat would be prohibitively expensive and would increase the risk of damage during transit, so all our rugs are carefully folded for shipping.
The creases you see will disappear on their own within a few days. It’s just the hide remembering its folded position. Once it’s been laying flat in your space for a bit, it forgets all about being folded and settles into its new home.
If you’re still seeing creases after a week, try the solutions above (weighing down the areas or lightly misting stubborn spots). But in 99% of cases, patience is all you need.

Quality & Comparisons

The honest answer comes down to three things: materials, construction, and process.
Materials:
We hand-select every hide before it becomes part of a rug. We’re looking for consistent texture, quality, and color. Cheaper rugs often use whatever hides are available, which means inconsistent quality and rugs that don’t age well.
Construction:
Our rugs are stitched with high-resistance nylon/polyester thread specifically designed for leather working. This isn’t regular thread, it’s engineered to handle the thickness and natural movement of hide. Cheaper rugs often use standard thread that breaks down over time or machine stitching that can’t adjust to the natural variations in hide thickness.

Process:
Every rug is made to order. We don’t mass-produce and warehouse inventory. Your rug is constructed specifically for you, with hand-selected pieces, careful pattern matching, and quality control at every stage. We review the rug during construction, make adjustments, and approve it before it ships. That level of attention to detail simply doesn’t exist in mass-produced rugs.
Backing:
Our anti-slip wool backing with optional EVA cushioning is premium compared to the thin canvas or mesh backing you’ll find on budget rugs.
The result? A rug that looks better, lasts longer, and feels like a genuine investment rather than something you’ll replace in a few years.

No, and here’s why that matters.
IKEA sells real cowhide rugs at a lower price point, which is great if you’re on a tight budget. But there are significant differences in quality and longevity:
Construction:
IKEA rugs are mass-produced, which means less attention to hide selection and quality control. You get whatever hide happens to be in the batch. Our rugs are made to order with hand-selected hides.
Backing and durability:
Budget rugs typically have simpler backing materials that don’t provide the same grip, floor protection, or longevity as our premium wool backing.
Customization:
IKEA sells what they sell, you can’t customize size, pattern, color, or design. If what they have in stock doesn’t fit your space perfectly, you’re out of luck. We make rugs to your exact specifications.
Lifespan:
An IKEA rug might last 3-5 years with careful use. A Shine Rugs patchwork cowhide rug will last 10-15+ years and actually look better with age.
Think of it like buying furniture. You can get an IKEA sofa that works fine for a few years, or you can invest in a quality piece that lasts decades.

Neither choice is wrong, it depends on your needs and timeline. But if you’re furnishing a long-term home and want something that will still look incredible in year ten, there’s a clear difference in value.

If you’re shopping around (and you should, make informed decisions), here’s what separates quality rugs from budget options:
The Touch Test:
Run your hand across the hide. Quality cowhide feels dense and supple with a slight warmth. It should have a natural texture, not a synthetic slickness or plastic coating. Press down, the hide should have some give but bounce back. If it feels thin, papery, or stiff, that’s lower-grade hide.
The Flip Test:
Look at the backing. Quality rugs have substantial backing (suede, felt, or premium wool) that’s securely attached with no bubbling or gaps. Budget rugs often have flimsy mesh or canvas backing. Check the edges, they should be clean and finished, not raw.
The Stitch Test:
Examine the stitching between patches. You’re looking for tight, even stitches (8-10 per inch is ideal) with thread that matches the hide color. Uneven spacing, loose threads, or mismatched thread color are signs of lower quality or machine assembly that can’t adjust to hide variations.
The Smell Test:
Quality cowhide has a pleasant, natural leather smell. Chemical or plasticky smells indicate lower-grade tanning processes or synthetic treatments.
Ask about customization:
If a company can’t customize colors, sizes, or patterns, they’re likely mass-producing rather than working with skilled artisans.
These are the same tests interior designers use in showrooms. Trust your hands and eyes.

Yes. Every rug is made from genuine hair-on-hide leather. No synthetic materials, no faux hide, no plastic printed to look like cowhide.
We use premium hides selected for consistent quality, texture, and color. Each piece is genuine cowhide with the natural hair intact, hand-stitched together to create the pattern.
The reason this matters: synthetic or faux cowhide might look similar in photos, but it doesn’t have the durability, natural stain resistance, or long-term beauty of genuine hide. Real cowhide develops character over time. Synthetic materials just break down.

Customization

Absolutely. Customization is one of our specialties, and it doesn’t cost extra, custom rugs are the same price as our standard designs.
You can customize:
Size:
Any size you need, from accent rugs to large statement pieces
Pattern:
Choose from our existing patterns (chevron, stripes, squares, houndstooth, etc.) or work with us to create something new
Color:
Select specific hide colors or color combinations
Shape:
Standard rectangles, squares, or custom shapes for specific spaces

The only things we can’t do are logos, lettering, or artificially dyed colors. Everything else is fair game.

It’s simpler than you might think:
1.
You share your vision:

Tell us what you’re looking for, size, pattern preference, color ideas, and where the rug will go.
2.
We collaborate:

We’ll discuss what’s possible, show you options, provide sketches or digital mockups, and give you a quote.
3.
You approve the design:

Once you’re happy with the plan, we move forward.
4.
We build your rug:

Our production team hand-selects hides and begins construction. We review the rug during the process and make any necessary adjustments.
5.
You approve the final product:

Before shipping, we send you photos of the actual rug you’ll receive. This is your chance to make sure it’s exactly what you wanted.
6.
We ship it to you:

Once approved, your rug ships directly to your address.
The whole process takes 5-6 weeks for production, plus about a week for international shipping.

Our preferred minimum is 5×7 feet for single rug orders.
That said, we’re flexible for bulk or specialized projects. If you need multiple smaller pieces (like stairway runners or a collection of accent rugs), we can work with you. The 5x7ft minimum is really about making sure the project makes sense from a production standpoint for one-off orders.
If you have something specific in mind that’s smaller than 5×7, reach out and let’s discuss it. We’re pretty reasonable about this.

Yes! We offer free samples to customers who are seriously considering an order.

This is a huge advantage because you get to see and feel the actual quality of the hide, the stitching, and the backing before committing to a full rug. You can check the texture, the color and make sure it’s exactly what you’re looking for.
To request a sample, just contact us at
sales@shinerugs.com
or call (415) 404-6638. We’ll send you a swatch that represents the hide quality and color you’re interested in.
This removes a lot of the anxiety around ordering a significant piece online. You get to see what you’re buying before you buy it.

Ordering, Shipping & Timeline

Production takes 5-6 weeks from the date of your order, and then shipping takes approximately one week.
So you’re looking at 6-7 weeks total from order to delivery.

Because every rug is handcrafted to order, nothing is sitting in a warehouse waiting to ship.
Here’s what happens during those 5-6 weeks:
Week 1-2: Hide selection and preparation
Our production team hand-selects individual hides based on your specific order. We’re matching colors, checking quality, and making sure every piece meets our standards. This can’t be rushed, we’re literally going through hides to find the right ones for your rug.
Week 3-4: Construction
Each piece is precisely cut to the pattern specifications and hand-stitched together using
leather-working grade thread. The stitching alone is time-intensive because it has to be done carefully to handle the natural thickness variations in hide.
Week 4-5: Quality control and finishing
We review the rug, make any adjustments, attach the backing, and do final finishing. We also send you photos at this stage so you can approve the final product before shipping.
Week 5-6: Packaging and preparation for shipping
The rug is carefully folded and packaged for international transit.
Could this be faster? Sure, if we mass-produced rugs and kept inventory on hand. But then you wouldn’t get custom sizing, pattern selection, or the quality control that comes with made-to-order production. The timeline reflects the craftsmanship.
Most customers tell us the wait is worth it when they see the final product.

Yes, and shipping is completely free regardless of where you are.
We ship via DHL, FedEx, or UPS, depending on your location. Once your rug ships, we’ll send you tracking information so you can follow its journey.

Rugs are carefully folded for transit protection. Folding is the safest way to ship rugs internationally, it prevents damage during handling and reduces shipping costs (which we cover, not you).
Yes, this means your rug will arrive with some creases. This is normal and expected, and the creases will naturally relax within a few days of laying the rug flat. See the “How do I flatten a cowhide rug” question above for more details.

Yes. We handle all international customs duties and import taxes, so the price you see is the price you pay.
You won’t get hit with surprise fees when your rug arrives. We take care of that on our end.

Returns, Exchanges & Warranty

We want you to love your rug, and we stand behind our quality.
For quality issues or manufacturing defects:
You can return the rug within 30 days of delivery for a full refund if there are any quality flaws or manufacturing errors. We’ll cover this, it’s on us.
For sizing, color, or pattern mistakes on your end:
We cannot accept returns if you ordered the wrong size, color, or model. This is why we strongly encourage you to:

Measure your space carefully
Request a sample if you’re unsure about color
Ask us any questions before ordering

We’re happy to help you get it right the first time. Call us at (415) 404-6638 or email sales@shinerugs.com if you need guidance on sizing or have any doubts.
For custom orders:
All custom orders are final sale. We send you photos for approval before shipping, specifically so you can confirm everything is exactly what you want.
If you need to return:
Contact us with photos showing the issue. Once we confirm it’s a quality problem, we’ll arrange for a replacement or refund. Return shipping is your responsibility unless the issue was our error.

Unfortunately, we can’t accept returns for sizing mistakes because all our rugs are made to order specifically for you.
This is why we’re very upfront about encouraging you to measure carefully and reach out with questions. We’d much rather spend 10 minutes on the phone helping you get the right size than have you receive a rug that doesn’t fit your space.
Before you order:

  • Measure your space edge-to-edge
  • Consider your furniture arrangement
  • Check our sizing guide or call us for recommendations
  • When in doubt, go slightly larger rather than smaller

We can also create custom sizes, so if our standard options don’t quite work for your space, we can make exactly what you need.

We offer a 6-month warranty on all rugs from the date of purchase.
This warranty covers manufacturing defects and quality issues that arise from normal use, things like stitching coming apart, backing separating, or hide quality problems.
The warranty does not cover:

-Damage from improper care (soaking the rug, using harsh chemicals, machine washing)
-Normal wear and tear
-Damage from pets or accidents
-Modifications or alterations you make to the rug
The warranty assumes you’re using the rug for its intended purpose and following basic care guidelines.
If you have an issue within the warranty period, contact us with photos and a description of the problem. We’ll work with you to resolve it.

Ethics & Sustainability

Yes. Our hides are a byproduct of the food industry, they come from animals already processed for meat.
By using these hides to create long-lasting home goods, we’re participating in a circular economy where nothing goes to waste. The alternative would be discarding these hides, which is wasteful and environmentally problematic.
Additionally, genuine cowhide is a natural, biodegradable material. At the end of its very long life (10-15+ years), it will naturally decompose rather than sitting in a landfill for centuries like synthetic rugs made from petroleum-based materials.
If you’re looking for sustainable, eco-friendly flooring options, natural cowhide is significantly better for the environment than synthetic alternatives made from plastic and treated with chemicals.

There are synthetic options that attempt to mimic the look of cowhide, but we don’t recommend them, and here’s why:
Faux cowhide is essentially plastic, usually polyester or PVC printed to look like hide. It won’t have the durability, natural stain resistance, or longevity of genuine hide. More importantly, it’s not environmentally friendly. You’re buying petroleum-based materials that will end up in a landfill and won’t biodegrade.
If you want the patchwork geometric look for ethical or preference reasons, you’re better off looking at other natural materials like wool or natural fiber rugs in geometric patterns rather than plastic imitations.
But if you genuinely want the performance, durability, and aesthetic of cowhide, the real thing is actually the more sustainable and ethical choice because it uses an existing byproduct rather than creating new synthetic materials.
