We’ve spoken about Layering Cowhide Rugs in the past, but some time has gone by and I decided to take a second look at this ever-lasting trend that doesn’t seem to be fading away any time soon.

I mostly wanted to share some ideas and tips to keep in mind when layering cowhide rugs.

Tip #1 Patterns + Solid Color

When deciding on the style of the rugs you’re going to layer, it’s ideal to choose a patterned rug and a plain one.

If you’re looking at a busy under rug, a plain cowhide will tone down the whole scheme and even allow you to mix some more patterns around your space.

Using a natural fiber plain rug? Go ahead and look for a super busy pattern in your hide. A natural Tricolor Salt & Pepper will be a showstopper every time, definitely.

Tip #2 Play With The Angles

Consider playing around with an angled cowhide instead of having it perpendicular to your area rug.

This will give you not only a touch of daring style, but also will allow you to show off your area rug a bit more.

If you have enough space, it’s a great idea to let a part of the hide “fall” out of the area rug, so it’s directly on the floor.

If your area rug is large and covers most of the room, just play around with your hide’s angle, even if it sits entirely on the big area rug.

Tip #3 Use Similar Tones

If you’re using patterns or just going with 2 plain rugs, look for a common tone in both rugs. Even more, if your space looks busy or you’re playing around with many patterns and different tones

This will help merge the whole color scheme of your design just by finding a common ground between the layers.

Tip #4 Keep It Slim

Opt for flat or low pile rugs, this is always the best choice, even more so if you’re planning on placing furniture on top of them.

This way it won’t seem like the top rug is sinking into the bottom one!

Tip #5 Trust Your Intuiton

Always trust your gut. Designing an interior has rules and guidelines, but it’s mostly about feeling. You are the one who is living there, so go with your own flow and let your ideas take you a step further!
