Tips and Tricks: How To Visualize The Size Of An Area Rug

This is one of the most useful tricks I’ve learnt in my many years of working with leather area rugs. I’ve used it oh-so-many times and recommended clients to do it at their homes over and over again.

Sometimes when doubt strikes you can find yourself lost in a sea of options. Even the most simple decisions become impossible and you end up confused and insecure about every little thing.

Choosing the right size of your area rug doesn’t have to be a pain. It’s fairly easy if you put a little effort into it.

So, here goes:

You will be “drawing” the rug on your floor to visualize it to perfection! Stress free.

This little trick will avoid one-too-many headaches and save you from a terrible situation: a rug that is too small for your space. Agh!

Cardboard is used in this house to help visualize the area rug

You can use a variety of materials to do this. For example:

-Cardboard – easy to get and easy to set up

-Newspapers – not as fast and tidy as laying down cardboard on the floor, but super useful

-Painter’s or masking tape – easy to use and super easy to remove

-Sheets – use a couple of bed sheets or even towels

-Painter’s plastic protection (drop cloths or sheeting) – very easy to get and cheap as they come!

-You are also going to need a measuring tape.

Now that you have an idea of the amount of different materials you could use, there’s no excuse and you’ll always get the perfect size.

Sometimes when you’re moving into a new house, you’ll see all the empty space, trying to imagine the size of the furniture, the rug, the lamps, the chairs… Not so easy.

So, just lay the chosen material (in my example above we used cardboard), place the furniture if you already have it, or use more of your cardboard/tape/plastic/etc to “draw” it on top of your imaginary area rug, just to be safe.

Leave it for a couple of hours, come back, check it out again and then once more. You get the idea. This will greatly help you see if your rug has to be bigger, smaller, if you have to give it a couple of inches here or there.

Live with it even for days if you can’t see it, but this will definitely help you decide. No surprises, no headaches. Only the joy of a correct-sized area rug. Yay! 🙂
